One cold, rainy autumn morning in 1610, a shipment of goods arrived in Milan from Venice. Amongst the many items to be delivered was a wooden chest which no-one had ordered, addressed to the Reverend Andrea Bassi, Vicar of San Lorenzo. The Vicar opened the elegantly-made box himself, at once: it contained musical parts whose ink was still shiny, a sure sign that the notes had only recently been composed or copied. A musical story originating in the imagination of Marco Mencoboni is the background from which an important concert was born, held in Milan at the Church of San Lorenzo alle Colonne in 2005. The emotions of a live concert, in a church surprisingly packed to the gills, is what makes up the contents of this CD.
