Costanzo Porta, was born in Cremona around 1530, an exceptional composer among the musicians and theorists of the time. Many of his publications, which appear as from 1955, were dedicated to members of the ducal family; Cardinal Giulio della Rovere, who was his tireless supporter, has received this honour twice. In 1565 Porta’s services were requested in Florence for the Pentecostal celebrations. On this occasion he met Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici and his son Francesco who together with Cardinal Carlo Borromeo and Felice Peretti (the future Pope Sesto) inspired an additional part for the Missa Ducalis for 13 voices, in which the thirteenth voice intones a cantus firmus for the protection of Duke Cosimo and the young Francesco.
